Center for Strategic and International Studies | In-Person & Virtual event

Description: The CSIS Abshire-Inamori Leadership Academy is delighted to host a conversation with Ross Kaplan, Senior Advisor at the U.S. Department of State. Kaplan has twenty-four years of experience at the Department; he currently works as a Senior Advisor in the Bureau of Counter Terrorism’s Office of the Special Envoy for the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS where he leads the Africa Focus Group. Kaplan will discuss careers at the U.S. Department of State, the department’s diversity; equity; inclusion; and accessibility (DEIA) focus, and his experience in the Bureau of Counterterrorism.

Jobs inside the U.S. government can be nebulous, as can the process to get in the door—both for early career professionals and for more seasoned experts looking to enter public service. This conversation will explore how prospective applicants can navigate the hiring process, as well as life as a State Department employee, from the day-to-day work to inclusion and accessibility. After opening remarks and a moderated discussion, the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions, both in person and online.

CSIS, and the Leadership Academy in particular, aims to support and develop the foreign policy leaders of tomorrow; as such, we are thrilled to host this conversation and provide a forum for anyone interested in careers at the State Department.

This event will take place at CSIS HQ, located at 1616 Rhode Island Avenue NW. It will also be livestreamed on the event page and on YouTube.
