Description: Critical minerals are foundational for national, economic and energy security. Historically, the United States was one of the world’s leading mining jurisdictions. But over the last three decades, it has been bypassed by China, which has positioned minerals at the center of its domestic industrial strategy and foreign policy. Today, China is the dominant player in global mineral production and processing. The need to address U.S. critical minerals shortfalls has become a key bipartisan priority Frank Fannon, Inaugural Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of Energy Resources (2018-2021), will join Gracelin Baskaran, Director, Project on Critical Minerals Security, CSIS, to discuss a stocktake of U.S. critical minerals policies and outcomes, whether the Inflation Reduction Act and Foreign Entity of Concern rules are providing adequate carrots and sticks to achieve its goals, and what more could and should the U.S. do.
