The Atlantic Council | Virtual Event

Description: On Wednesday, December 20 at 8:00am (Eastern Time) / 9:00pm (Taiwan), please join the Atlantic Council’s Indo-Pacific Security Initiative (IPSI), housed in the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security, and the Global China Hub (GCH) for a conversation on Countering Beijing’s economic coercion in the Indo-Pacific. As part of a broader strategy to advance its interests, Beijing has threatened Taiwan and a range of countries in the Indo-Pacific with coercive economic measures, in an effort to shape policy decisions in the region to its favor. On a number of occasions, Beijing has moved beyond threats to taking such measures in an attempt to impose costs for defying its will. This challenge has key implications for the future security of Taiwan, as well as for the broader interests of the United States and its allies and partners throughout the region. During this virtual event, speakers will share their expert insights on past events of economic coercion, the nature of the current and future threat, along with the path forward. This event is part of IPSI and GCH’s Cross-Strait Seminar Series, held in partnership with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO), a premier platform for informing the public debate on issues of importance for Taiwan and the United States.
