The Atlantic Council | In-Person and Virtual Event
Description: Please join the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security’s Forward Defense program for a hybrid public event: “A strategic posture for a new era: Introducing the Congressional Strategic Posture Commission report.” This discussion will be held on Friday, October 20, from 3:00–5:00 p.m. ET at the Atlantic Council headquarters (1030 15th Street, NW, 12th Floor, Washington, DC 20005) and via Zoom. The final report of the Strategic Posture Commission comes at at time when the United States faces growing challenges in the international security environment that may undermine existing US nuclear deterrence strategy and policy. Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, transfer of nuclear weapons to Belarus, and persistent arsenal of nonstrategic nuclear weapons pose security threats to the United States as well as its allies and partners. With the pending expiration of New START in 2026, and with Russia’s noncompliance of the treaty today, the future of arms control is in question. Meanwhile, China, the pacing challenge for the Department of Defense, is on track to expand its nuclear arsenal severalfold over the coming years, presenting the United States with the novel challenge of simultaneous deterrence of nuclear near peers. Meanwhile, the nuclear challenge from North Korea and the potential of an Iranian nuclear breakout continue to vex policymakers in Washington and beyond. This event will feature remarks from Congressional Commission Chair Madelyn Creedon and Vice Chair Jon Kyl, as well as an expert panel.
