SUMMARY:Assessing Taiwan’s economic resilience
DESCRIPTION:Brookings Description: \nTaiwan has been an exemplar of economic resilience. Its high-income economy weathered the COVID-19 pandemic better than many of its peers around the world\, and it has thus far skillfully navigated U.S.-China economic tensions. Moreover\, Taiwan’s advanced semiconductor manufacturing capabilities have helped ensure its central role in global supply chains. But Taiwan’s economy is not without its vulnerabilities. There is a fear that a lack of economic diversification poses risks. The socio-economic impacts of Taiwan’s leadership transition earlier this year and the forthcoming U.S. leadership transition\, as well as how relations with China may evolve in light of these developments\, remain uncertain. \nOn December 3\, the Center for Asia Policy Studies (CAPS) at Brookings and the Center for Asia-Pacific Resilience and Innovation (CAPRI) will host a panel of experts for an analytical discussion assessing Taiwan’s economic resilience. \nViewers can submit questions via e-mail to events@brookings.edu or via Twitter/X at #TaiwanEconomicResilience.

SUMMARY:The fentanyl epidemic in North America and the global reach of synthetic opioids
DESCRIPTION:Brookings Description: \nIn-Person and Virtual. Over the past two decades\, the United States has battled an unprecedented opioid crisis\, with synthetic opioids like fentanyl driving overdose deaths to devastating levels. In 2021 alone\, more than 100\,000 Americans died from drug overdoses. After years of grim statistics\, overdose rates started declining in 2024. Is the U.S. finally turning a corner on the opioid crisis? How have U.S. domestic and external drug policies evolved? How are synthetic opioids spreading beyond North America and reshaping drug markets and policies worldwide? \nOn December 4\, join the Brookings Institution’s Foreign Policy program for an event to launch the results of a year-long project on synthetic opioids in the United States and abroad. Highlighting the project’s findings and featuring top experts\, the event will open with a fireside chat between former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Senior Fellow Vanda Felbab-Brown. Subsequent panels will explore U.S. drugs markets\, domestic law enforcement\, treatment\, harm reduction\, and decriminalization policies as well as the international dimensions of synthetic opioids and their spread beyond North America. \nViewers can join the conversation to ask questions of the panelists by emailing events@brookings.edu or on X/Twitter using #FentanylEpidemicForum.

SUMMARY:Wreaths Across America: Wreath Laying Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery Supported by AFCEA NOVA Emerging Leaders
DESCRIPTION:  \nAFCEA Description: \nWreaths Across America Program \n\n\n\nREMEMBER the fallen… HONOR those who serve… TEACH our children the value of freedom. \nArlington is where the Wreaths Across America program began. Starting in 1992\, our Founder and his family placed wreaths each December in a different section as a way of saying ‘Thank You’ to our nation’s servicemembers. This private gift went on for many years before the public knew. In 2007\, Wreaths Across America the national nonprofit was founded to expand upon this effort to include communities and citizens across the country. \nToday\, it is our goal to continue to honor ALL those laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery each December. Our volunteers are committed to Remembering and Honoring our nation’s veterans through the laying of wreaths on the graves of our country’s fallen heroes and the act of saying the name of each veteran aloud.  \nPlease help Wreaths Across America reach our goal by sponsoring a veteran’s wreath for placement by volunteers on Saturday\, December 14\, 2024. \nThank you for supporting Wreaths Across America’s efforts at Arlington National Cemetery!
