SUMMARY:The future of America’s international alliances and partnerships: What’s at stake in the 2024 election
DESCRIPTION:Brookings Institution Description: \nThe United States is at a critical juncture for its foreign policy. As U.S. policymakers confront long-term strategic competition with China\, major wars in Europe and the Middle East are unfolding. How the next U.S. administration and Congress address these key challenges will define America’s global leadership role for decades to come. How should they navigate this complex landscape? Do existing foreign policy frameworks need reevaluation? Are the networks of alliances and partnerships delivering as intended? What military footprint best serves American interests in Europe\, Asia\, and the Middle East? \nOn Monday\, October 14\, the Brookings Foreign Policy program in partnership with the Baker School at the University of Tennessee\, Knoxville\, will host a fireside chat with former U.S. Senator Bob Corker in conversation with Brookings Vice President and Director of the Foreign Policy program Suzanne Maloney and the Baker School’s Director of the Center for National Security and Foreign Affairs Krista Wiegand. The speakers will offer perspectives on America’s role in the world. Following the fireside chat\, an expert panel will continue the discussion to consider how best to work with partners and allies to manage global challenges. Audience Q&A will follow each session. \nViewers are welcome to submit questions via email to events@brookings.edu and via X (Twitter) to @BrookingsFP using #AlliancesandPartnerships. \nThis event is a part of Brookings’ Election ’24: Issues at Stake\, an initiative aimed to bring public attention to consequential policy issues confronting voters and policymakers in the run-up to the 2024 election. This includes equipping leaders with insights and policy ideas to help them govern in 2025 and beyond.

SUMMARY:A Conversation with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell
DESCRIPTION:Carnegie Endowment For International Peace Description: \n\nBeyond Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas\, the Biden administration has faced significant international challenges over the president’s four years in office.  President Biden and his team have contended with a range of issues including strategic competition\, growing threats to democracies\, climate change\, critical minerals supply chains\, and shaping the transformative potential of emerging tech to solve global problems without exacerbating regional economic inequality. When it comes to foreign policy\, as George Will quipped\, the American public wants as little of it as possible\, but that hasn’t been the case over the last four years. \n\n\nWhat are the key principles and assumptions that have underscored its approach to foreign policy? And what kind of world does it leave for its successors? \n\n\nU.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell has served in the Biden administration from the beginning\, first at the White House and more recently at the State Department. Join Aaron David Miller as he sits down with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell to discuss these and other issues.

SUMMARY:Spies\, Lies\, and Robots: The Rise of AI Chatbots and the Counterintelligence Dilemma
DESCRIPTION:International Spy Museum Description: \nAI chatbots have emerged as a significant challenge to national security\, evolving from simple customer service tools to sophisticated entities capable of mimicking human behavior. This transformation poses a dilemma for counterintelligence efforts\, as these chatbots infiltrate various communication channels\, including social networks\, dating sites\, and even pornography platforms\, to extract sensitive information or manipulate users. \nTonight\, intelligence historian and Spy Museum Board Member H. Keith Melton will explore the evolution of AI chatbots and the threats they pose across different communication channels\, using advanced graphics to illustrate their capabilities. As these capabilities continue to advance\, the risk of widespread disruption and compromise increases along established and emerging attack vectors. Melton will suggest ways that counterintelligence agencies can address this growing threat effectively—in particular\, proactive measures such as enhancing vetting procedures and deploying advanced detection algorithms. He cautions that only through collective vigilance and concerted efforts can we effectively counter the evolving menace of AI-powered threats and hostile foreign intelligence activities. He’ll also cover the pressing need to adapt national security policies to the dynamic landscape of technological espionage. \nSelected books by H. Keith Melton will be available for sale and signing after the event. \nThe in-person event will have open seating available on a first-come\, first-serve basis.

SUMMARY:Preparing the Next Generation of Diplomats
DESCRIPTION:United States Institute of Peace | In-Person Event \nDescription: Military doctrine has been an essential part of any grand strategy for more than a century. But a diplomatic equivalent has never existed\, leaving a gap in statecraft. With “Diplomatic Tradecraft\,” the first practical diplomacy textbook\, Nicholas Kralev and colleagues at the Washington International Diplomatic Academy have taken a step toward creating a body of interrelated operational concepts describing how to influence the behavior of other states and people by mostly nonviolent means. They teach skills that\, in the past\, could be learned only on the job. “Diplomatic Tradecraft” brings together 18 career diplomats with decades of experience to lift the curtain on a mysterious but vital profession\, and to pass on the insights and abilities they gained to those who will succeed them. With compelling narratives\, case studies and exercises\, the book forms a cohesive and comprehensive volume. Join USIP to mark the book’s publication\, and for a conversation on the current state of U.S. and global diplomacy\, its impact on real people’s lives\, and the urgent need for governments to rethink their approaches to recruiting and training diplomats. This event will be followed by a book signing. If you wish to participate\, please purchase a copy of “Diplomatic Tradecraft” ahead of time and bring it with you to the event. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:The American Democracy and Health Security Initiative: Lighting a Path Amid Pandemic Polarization
DESCRIPTION:Center for Strategic and International Studies|Virtual Event \nDescription: Please join the Brown University School of Public Health Pandemic Center\, the COVID Collaborative\, and the CSIS Bipartisan Alliance for Global Health Security for the launch of the American Democracy and Health Security Initiative. The story of how America fared under the Covid-19 pandemic is actually two stories. While the more well-known story is one of failure\, confusion\, and polarization\, the other story is one of American ingenuity amidst profound uncertainty. State and local leaders were at the center of this untold story—in serving their communities they innovated\, bridged divides\, and illuminated America’s path during the Covid-19 pandemic’s darkest days. The American Democracy and Health Security Initiative spotlights these lamplighters and harvests their hard-won lessons\, to ensure the most successful strategies can be sustained or replicated in future crises. On June 5\, the American Democracy and Health Security Initiative will publish its findings on what actionable steps are needed to advance our health security for the future. The event will feature leaders from across the country from Governors\, advisors\, and health leaders to community organizations\, educators\, businesses\, and crisis managers. We will discuss urgent opportunities to make the country more resilient against future threats to our health security and to our democracy and identify national and local innovations that must be retained and playbooks that are needed to reinvigorate leadership\, bipartisanship\, and equitable access in the face of the next health emergency in America. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:A Conversation on Debt Sustainability and Growth in Sub-Saharan African Countries
DESCRIPTION:United States Institute of Peace | Virtual Event \nDescription: Debt issuance can help finance much-needed investments in Sub-Saharan countries and sort out key bottlenecks to growth. However\, while many of the investments made were essential for economic progress\, several governments overestimated the growth impact of such investments and underestimated implementation constraints and future shocks\, both leading to borrowing beyond the country’s repayment capacity and eventually driving debt distress. This has threatened their macroeconomic stability and limited their ability to invest in the critical areas necessary for long-term economic growth\, such as climate resilience\, education\, healthcare\, and social services. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Paths to progress: Race\, equity\, and democracy
DESCRIPTION:The Brookings Institution | Virtual Event \nDescription: Our country’s overall progress is undeniably linked to race relations and the well-being of various racial groups. People across racial and ethnic identities desire financial security\, health\, affordable housing\, quality schools\, and safe neighborhoods\, along with confidence that our government and leaders act with a sense of fairness. The differing outcomes across racial lines on basic quality of life measures make racial equity a pivotal issue for the upcoming U.S. presidential election. On Monday\, June 3\, the new Center for Community Uplift (CCU) at Brookings\, directed by Senior Fellow Andre M. Perry\, will explore how different racial groups perceive their progress on measures of well-being and economic security. The “Paths to Progress” event is co-hosted by HUMANLEVEL\, an initiative founded by artist and activist John Legend that promotes systemic change and racial equity across American communities. Differentiating from the dominant discourse around racial divisions\, “Paths to Progress” will address racial equity as a unifying priority and an issue at stake in the upcoming presidential election. Featured scholars and practitioners will focus on our interconnectedness with the aim of forming a policy agenda around achieving collective prosperity. John Legend will lead an intimate conversation on solutions that eliminate discrimination\, racism\, and exclusion. This event is part of Election ’24: Issues at Stake\, a Brookings initiative that aims to bring public attention to consequential policy issues confronting voters and policymakers in the run up to the 2024 election. This includes equipping leaders with insights and policy ideas to help them govern in 2025 and beyond. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:US Trade Representative Katherine Tai on the future for US-EU trade
DESCRIPTION:The Atlantic Council | Virtual Event \nDescription: On Monday\, June 3 at 1:00 p.m. ET\, the Atlantic Council is hosting an #ACFrontPage conversation featuring United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai on how the United States and European Union (EU) should evolve the transatlantic trade relationship to reflect new geopolitical realities. As the Bretton Woods system marks its eightieth anniversary\, there is growing recognition that the international financial and trading system should adapt to the realities of the modern global economy. But how it adapts\, and what founding principles it holds on to\, will be critical. Through the post-war years and beyond\, strong trade relations between the United States and Europe provided increased prosperity and security and have been a stabilizing force. However\, today both sides of the Atlantic are confronting new geopolitical and geoeconomic realities\, which have triggered debate over the future of this order—and mirror similar challenges the transatlantic alliance faced in the early postwar years. These strategic challenges have sparked new action around economic security\, including\, for example\, export controls\, investment screening\, and\, most recently\, Washington’s imposition of higher tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles\, semiconductors\, critical minerals\, batteries\, and more. Transatlantic coordination on these challenges will be critical to build greater resilience to any response from Beijing and other challengers\, and the revitalization and restoration of the global economic system is a mission of the Atlantic Council’s Bretton Woods 2.0 project. Placing today’s challenges in the context of the original vision for Bretton Woods and the fight for democracy\, Ambassador Tai joins the Atlantic Council for a moderated conversation on these critical issues\, the future of US-EU trade relations\, and the nexus of trade\, economic policy\, and national security. This edition of #ACFrontPage will be livestreamed on Atlantic Council TV\, YouTube\, Facebook\, and X (formerly Twitter). This event is open to the public\, including media\, via the livestream. To join us virtually\, please complete the registration form. \nThe registration link can be found below.
