SUMMARY:Populist Leaders and Foreign Policy: Sovereigntism on the Rise?
DESCRIPTION:German Marshall Fund | Virtual event \nDescription: In recent times\, populist leaders and parties have gained increasing prominence on the international scene\, from President Donald Trump in the United States to Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz party or Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her Fratelli d’Italia. Beyond the domestic scene\, their influence on their countries’ foreign relations is also growing. Scholars have traditionally focused on the effects of populism on domestic politics and policy\, but newer academic inquiry is increasingly interested in the foreign policy implications of populist leadership. The working paper titled “Populist Leaders and Foreign Policy Rhetoric: A Comparative Study of Hungary and Austria” presented at this discussion examines the national security strategy documents of Austria and Hungary\, as well as of parliamentary debates and public speeches of populist actors\, to ascertain whether there has been an increase in sovereigntist foreign policy rhetoric in these countries. Through a mixed methods analysis\, the research assessed whether there are similarities in Austria and Hungary in foreign policy communication on topics such as immigration\, the EU\, and Russia. Beyond exploring changes in the foreign policy rhetoric of populists\, the discussion will also touch on the international policy implications of such actors assuming power in Europe and beyond. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:A back-to-business birthday: Priorities for the 2024 NATO Summit in Washington
DESCRIPTION:The Atlantic Council | In-Person & Virtual Event \nDescription: Please join the Atlantic Council’s Transatlantic Security Initiative\, in the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security\, for a hybrid public event evaluating priorities for the milestone NATO Summit taking place in Washington\, DC\, this summer. Held in partnership with the Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Lithuania\, this event will take place on Monday\, April 29\, from 9:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. ET at the  Atlantic Council’s headquarters (1030 15th St NW\, 12th Floor\, Washington\, DC 20005) and virtually. As NATO accelerates preparations for its 75th Anniversary Summit taking place in Washington this July\, the transatlantic alliance will have much to celebrate. The accession of Finland and Sweden has added two highly-capable militaries to NATO’s roster. Allies bolstered NATO’s regional force posture and readiness with the adoption of a new suite of defense plans. And after decades of underinvestment\, NATO’s European allies have ramped up defense spending in support of Ukraine and in recognition of the mounting Russian threat. These causes for celebration are\, however\, juxtaposed with a deteriorating security environment and a collection of unfinished business from last year’s Vilnius Summit. Securing the future of the world’s most successful military alliance will require this year’s Summit to be one of implementation. NATO will be expected to take action to improve the under-equipped state of its defense industrial base\, to reinforce its vulnerable eastern flank\, and to demonstrate executability of its defense plans while also preparing for a new slate of challenges cutting across domains and beyond the military alliance’s traditional area of responsibility. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Strengthening U.S. Critical Minerals Security: A Fireside Conversation with Frank Fannon
DESCRIPTION:Center for Strategic and International Studies | Virtual Event \nDescription: Critical minerals are foundational for national\, economic and energy security. Historically\, the United States was one of the world’s leading mining jurisdictions. But over the last three decades\, it has been bypassed by China\, which has positioned minerals at the center of its domestic industrial strategy and foreign policy. Today\, China is the dominant player in global mineral production and processing. The need to address U.S. critical minerals shortfalls has become a key bipartisan priority Frank Fannon\, Inaugural Assistant Secretary of State\, Bureau of Energy Resources (2018-2021)\, will join Gracelin Baskaran\, Director\, Project on Critical Minerals Security\, CSIS\, to discuss a stocktake of U.S. critical minerals policies and outcomes\, whether the Inflation Reduction Act and Foreign Entity of Concern rules are providing adequate carrots and sticks to achieve its goals\, and what more could and should the U.S. do. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Climate Diplomacy in South Asia: Transboundary Challenges\, Collective Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Stimson Center | Virtual Event \nDescription: Climate change has no borders. In the face of escalating climate-induced vulnerabilities and transboundary disasters\, South Asian states find themselves at a crossroads where regional cooperation is imperative for effective adaptation and mitigation. From the interconnected challenges of managing transboundary water resources to addressing the urgent issue of climate-induced migration\, the region faces a complex web of geopolitical\, socio-economic\, and environmental hurdles. Despite shared vulnerabilities and similar institutional frameworks\, structural barriers such as data secrecy and outdated agreements often hinder the path toward meaningful cooperation. Entrenched geopolitical rivalry plays an enormous role in perpetuating these barriers\, but there are feasible steps each country can take to overcome them. South Asian Voices collaborated with The Third Pole on a series aimed at igniting dialogue and action for a more collaborative approach to combating climate change in South Asia. In this event\, authors of the series will reflect on their recent contributions to SAV. From examining transboundary approaches to tackling climate migration\, water sharing\, and disaster management\, the panel will discuss key challenges to effective regional cooperation and identify concrete ways forward. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Pivotal States: Russia and U.S. Global Strategy
DESCRIPTION:Carnegie Endowment for International Peace | Virtual event \nDescription: Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine has brought bilateral relations with the United States to their lowest point since the Cuban missile crisis. And with Vladimir Putin claiming to be at war with the West\, how might the United States avert catastrophe with Russia? \nPlease join the director of the Carnegie Endowment’s American Statecraft Program\, Christopher S. Chivvis\, for an in-person edition of the Pivotal States series and a discussion of Washington’s strategic alternatives in its policy toward Russia with Fiona Hill and Andrew S. Weiss. SUMMARY:Transnational Organized Crime in Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:United States Institute of Peace | In-Person Event \nDescription: Southeast Asia has become a major breeding ground for transnational criminal networks emanating from China. These organizations operate illegal and unregulated online gambling and sophisticated scamming operations that steal an estimated $64 billion a year from millions of victims around the world. Their compounds — which frequently resemble penal institutions due to their reliance on forced labor — are often established in partnership with powerful local elites\, sometimes in urban centers of countries with weak or corrupt governance. From their foothold in Southeast Asia\, these criminal networks are increasingly building a presence elsewhere in the world\, with signs that they seek connectivity with organized criminal groups globally. \nThe registration link can be found below.

This event features a moderated discussion about the role middleground companies play to strengthen the defense-industrial ecosystem\, with John Goodman\, Chief Executive Officer\, Accenture Federal Services\, William J. Lynn III\, Chairman Chief Executive Officer of Leonardo DRS\, and Ellen M. Lord\, former Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition & Sustainment. The Pentagon’s National Defense Industrial Strategy (NDIS) expresses the imperative of “strengthening and modernizing our defense industrial base ecosystem” and sets priorities for meeting those challenges. In ecology\, middleground is the land which buffers and intermediates the needs of pristine nature and human-dominated spaces. So too\, in a healthy defense-industrial ecosystem\, do companies occupying the middleground between ubiquitous small companies and preponderant big ones play important\, salutary roles. The captains of industry assembled for this event will discuss issues that face these middleground companies\, and how public policies and corporate strategies can address them. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:The Red Zone: Charting Paths to Resilience in the Climate-Conflict Nexus
DESCRIPTION:Center for Strategic and International Studies | In-Person & Virtual event \nDescription: The interplay between climate change and conflict has exacerbated humanitarian crisis and human insecurity globally. In an era marked by rising temperatures\, water scarcity\, and protracted conflict–from the arid landscapes of the Middle East to land degradation of Sub-Saharan Africa–the impact of climate shocks and violence is unmistakable and costly. The humanitarian sector must respond to the gravest needs while navigating the complex terrain of climate adaptation in crisis-affected regions\, overcoming funding barriers\, and bolstering resilience against climate variability. It is imperative that the international community mobilizes resources and implements robust strategies to address these intertwined challenges\, ensuring the protection and well-being of vulnerable communities. The Washington Humanitarian Forum 2024 will feature conversations at the intersection of climate change\, conflict\, and finance. The intersection of these crises magnifies vulnerabilities\, leaving populations even more susceptible to extreme weather events and increased violence. The conference will spotlight this nexus and emphasize the imperative for swift and substantial climate financing to bolster resilience and alleviate human suffering. Join us as we explore innovative climate solutions\, forge new partnerships between sectors\, and advocate for urgent policy action to address the pressing challenges of climate change and conflict on a global scale. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Can Connectivity Reconnect the EU and Türkiye?
DESCRIPTION:German Marshall Fund |In-Person Event \nDescription: Amid a stalled accession process and a lack of progress on critical issues such as structured foreign policy dialogue\, visa liberalization\, and customs union modernization\, the EU and Türkiye need a positive agenda to guide their relations. Connectivity initiatives prevail as a new ground for cooperation given geopolitical developments and geo-economic shifts\, and the Middle Corridor is a promising avenue for linking Europe to Central Asia and beyond\, facilitating transportation and access to energy resources. In addition\, Türkiye’s proposal of the Development Corridor further underscores its commitment to enhancing connectivity\, offering a North-South axis in Iraq that connects Basra to Türkiye and extends to Europe and the Middle Corridor. Türkiye stands poised as a significant potential partner for EU connectivity as it leverages its strategic location and robust network of relationships\, especially within the Council of Turkic States. Join us for a conversation on the opportunities and challenges of cooperation on connectivity between Türkiye and the EU. A light lunch will be served before the event. Please RSVP by May 27 by clicking the button above. Should you have any questions or require special assistance\, please contact contact Ceylan Canbilek at ccanbilek@gmfus.org. This event is part of a series of events and analyses organized by the GMF-Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye (TOBB) Fellowship on Türkiye\, Europe\, and Global Issues. SUMMARY:US Trade Representative Katherine Tai on the future for US-EU trade
DESCRIPTION:The Atlantic Council | Virtual Event \nDescription: On Monday\, June 3 at 1:00 p.m. ET\, the Atlantic Council is hosting an #ACFrontPage conversation featuring United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai on how the United States and European Union (EU) should evolve the transatlantic trade relationship to reflect new geopolitical realities. As the Bretton Woods system marks its eightieth anniversary\, there is growing recognition that the international financial and trading system should adapt to the realities of the modern global economy. But how it adapts\, and what founding principles it holds on to\, will be critical. Through the post-war years and beyond\, strong trade relations between the United States and Europe provided increased prosperity and security and have been a stabilizing force. However\, today both sides of the Atlantic are confronting new geopolitical and geoeconomic realities\, which have triggered debate over the future of this order—and mirror similar challenges the transatlantic alliance faced in the early postwar years. These strategic challenges have sparked new action around economic security\, including\, for example\, export controls\, investment screening\, and\, most recently\, Washington’s imposition of higher tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles\, semiconductors\, critical minerals\, batteries\, and more. Transatlantic coordination on these challenges will be critical to build greater resilience to any response from Beijing and other challengers\, and the revitalization and restoration of the global economic system is a mission of the Atlantic Council’s Bretton Woods 2.0 project. Placing today’s challenges in the context of the original vision for Bretton Woods and the fight for democracy\, Ambassador Tai joins the Atlantic Council for a moderated conversation on these critical issues\, the future of US-EU trade relations\, and the nexus of trade\, economic policy\, and national security. This edition of #ACFrontPage will be livestreamed on Atlantic Council TV\, YouTube\, Facebook\, and X (formerly Twitter). This event is open to the public\, including media\, via the livestream. To join us virtually\, please complete the registration form. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Paths to progress: Race\, equity\, and democracy
DESCRIPTION:The Brookings Institution | Virtual Event \nDescription: Our country’s overall progress is undeniably linked to race relations and the well-being of various racial groups. People across racial and ethnic identities desire financial security\, health\, affordable housing\, quality schools\, and safe neighborhoods\, along with confidence that our government and leaders act with a sense of fairness. The differing outcomes across racial lines on basic quality of life measures make racial equity a pivotal issue for the upcoming U.S. presidential election. On Monday\, June 3\, the new Center for Community Uplift (CCU) at Brookings\, directed by Senior Fellow Andre M. Perry\, will explore how different racial groups perceive their progress on measures of well-being and economic security. The “Paths to Progress” event is co-hosted by HUMANLEVEL\, an initiative founded by artist and activist John Legend that promotes systemic change and racial equity across American communities. Differentiating from the dominant discourse around racial divisions\, “Paths to Progress” will address racial equity as a unifying priority and an issue at stake in the upcoming presidential election. Featured scholars and practitioners will focus on our interconnectedness with the aim of forming a policy agenda around achieving collective prosperity. John Legend will lead an intimate conversation on solutions that eliminate discrimination\, racism\, and exclusion. This event is part of Election ’24: Issues at Stake\, a Brookings initiative that aims to bring public attention to consequential policy issues confronting voters and policymakers in the run up to the 2024 election. This includes equipping leaders with insights and policy ideas to help them govern in 2025 and beyond. \nThe registration link can be found below.
