Mendez\, author of the new memoir In True Face: A Woman’s Life in the CIA Unmasked (2024)\, began her career at the CIA as a “contract wife\,” performing secretarial duties for the CIA as a convenience to her husband\, and eventually rose to management within the Office of Technical Services.\n\nThroughout her 27-year career at the CIA\, Mendez navigated the gendered culture of sexism while never wavering in her patriotism and witnessed the effect this gendered culture had on the women who served at the CIA and the overall mission. Her experience includes overseeing disguise operations throughout the Cold War in hostile environments from Moscow to Havana to Beijing\, and later taking cutting-edge technology into the Oval Office! \nSince retiring more than 20 years ago\, Mendez has contributed greatly to the development of the International Spy Museum and has cowritten books like The Moscow Rules (2019)\, ARGO (2012)\, and Spy Dust (2002). \nThose who attend our event in person will have the opportunity to speak directly with this remarkable intelligence officer and get a signed copy of In True Face. \nThere will be time for audience questions. High-profile projects have run into challenges\, many countries’ ability to borrow has declined\, and skepticism of China’s broader geopolitical intentions has grown in partner countries. How are Chinese scholars assessing the state of the BRI 10 years in? What risks and opportunities do they envision for its future development? SUMMARY:Populist Leaders and Foreign Policy: Sovereigntism on the Rise?
DESCRIPTION:German Marshall Fund | Virtual event \nDescription: In recent times\, populist leaders and parties have gained increasing prominence on the international scene\, from President Donald Trump in the United States to Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz party or Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her Fratelli d’Italia. Beyond the domestic scene\, their influence on their countries’ foreign relations is also growing. Scholars have traditionally focused on the effects of populism on domestic politics and policy\, but newer academic inquiry is increasingly interested in the foreign policy implications of populist leadership. The working paper titled “Populist Leaders and Foreign Policy Rhetoric: A Comparative Study of Hungary and Austria” presented at this discussion examines the national security strategy documents of Austria and Hungary\, as well as of parliamentary debates and public speeches of populist actors\, to ascertain whether there has been an increase in sovereigntist foreign policy rhetoric in these countries. Through a mixed methods analysis\, the research assessed whether there are similarities in Austria and Hungary in foreign policy communication on topics such as immigration\, the EU\, and Russia. Beyond exploring changes in the foreign policy rhetoric of populists\, the discussion will also touch on the international policy implications of such actors assuming power in Europe and beyond. \nThe registration link can be found below.

DESCRIPTION:The Atlantic Council | In-Person & Virtual Event \nDescription: Please join the Atlantic Council’s Transatlantic Security Initiative\, in the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security\, for a hybrid public event evaluating priorities for the milestone NATO Summit taking place in Washington\, DC\, this summer. Held in partnership with the Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Lithuania\, this event will take place on Monday\, April 29\, from 9:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. ET at the  Atlantic Council’s headquarters (1030 15th St NW\, 12th Floor\, Washington\, DC 20005) and virtually. As NATO accelerates preparations for its 75th Anniversary Summit taking place in Washington this July\, the transatlantic alliance will have much to celebrate. The accession of Finland and Sweden has added two highly-capable militaries to NATO’s roster. Allies bolstered NATO’s regional force posture and readiness with the adoption of a new suite of defense plans. And after decades of underinvestment\, NATO’s European allies have ramped up defense spending in support of Ukraine and in recognition of the mounting Russian threat. These causes for celebration are\, however\, juxtaposed with a deteriorating security environment and a collection of unfinished business from last year’s Vilnius Summit. Securing the future of the world’s most successful military alliance will require this year’s Summit to be one of implementation. NATO will be expected to take action to improve the under-equipped state of its defense industrial base\, to reinforce its vulnerable eastern flank\, and to demonstrate executability of its defense plans while also preparing for a new slate of challenges cutting across domains and beyond the military alliance’s traditional area of responsibility. \nThe registration link can be found below.

In the face of escalating climate-induced vulnerabilities and transboundary disasters\, South Asian states find themselves at a crossroads where regional cooperation is imperative for effective adaptation and mitigation. From the interconnected challenges of managing transboundary water resources to addressing the urgent issue of climate-induced migration\, the region faces a complex web of geopolitical\, socio-economic\, and environmental hurdles. Despite shared vulnerabilities and similar institutional frameworks\, structural barriers such as data secrecy and outdated agreements often hinder the path toward meaningful cooperation. Entrenched geopolitical rivalry plays an enormous role in perpetuating these barriers\, but there are feasible steps each country can take to overcome them. South Asian Voices collaborated with The Third Pole on a series aimed at igniting dialogue and action for a more collaborative approach to combating climate change in South Asia. In this event\, authors of the series will reflect on their recent contributions to SAV.
