SUMMARY:Next War Online: Using Cyber Games to Understand Emerging Threats
DESCRIPTION:Center for Strategic & International Studies | In-Person & Virtual Event  \nDescription: Please join the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) for a discussion on the importance of cyber wargames and exercises. As the cyber threat landscape continuous to evolve\, it has become difficult for public and private sector entities to adequately anticipate and prepare for different types of threats that might impact their networks and trust in their respective institutions. That’s where cyber games come in. Today’s cyber games not only help educate players about the nature of different types of threats\, but they also allow participants to clearly identify how they might adjust their real-world incident response plans to enhance resilience and mitigate the consequences of certain threats. The program will start with a presentation on a recent CSIS cyber exercise that was designed to show how different types of experts are thinking about future threats and challenges to federal networks. Following the presentation\, Dr. Ben Jensen (Senior Fellow for Gaming\, Future War\, and Strategy\, CSIS) will moderate a panel that will showcase the advancements in cyber game design and the importance of these exercises to government\, industry and academia. The panel will include Dr. Nina Kollars (Associate Professor\, Cyber and Innovation Policy Institute\, U.S. Naval War College)\, Dr. Jacquelyn Schneider (Director\, Wargaming and Crisis Simulation Initiative\, Hoover Institution)\, and Yasir Atalan (Researcher\, CSIS). Emily Harding (Deputy Director and Senior Fellow\, International Security Program\, CSIS) will deliver closing remarks. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Water: Access\, Livelihoods\, and Security
DESCRIPTION:Center for Strategic & International Studies | In-Person & Virtual Event  \nDescription: Please join the CSIS Project on Prosperity and Development\, in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)\, for an in-person discussion that will serve as the culmination of a series of roundtables centered around water access and security and discuss the major findings on the topic. Around 26 percent of the global population lacks access to clean drinking water and around 30 percent of people lack access to water for basic sanitation. Climate change\, the rise in global temperatures\, and natural disasters like storms and flooding have all caused major damage to sanitation infrastructure in many places. Inequities in people’s socio-economic status further exacerbate access to clean water. Marginalized groups\, such as religious minorities\, migrants\, and especially women\, have lesser access to proper sanitation and clean water. There is also a dire lack of good water governance and an excess of government regulation that has resulted in limited spending on water related issues. A lack of clean water access not only poses a major humanitarian issue but also becomes an international security hazard by exacerbating conflict through its impact on economic growth and migration. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Understanding Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in the Global Development Context
DESCRIPTION:Center for Strategic & International Studies | In-Person Event  \nDescription: CSIS\, in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation\, is conducting a yearlong research project on the United States’ role in advancing the digital public infrastructure (DPI) agenda to expand economic growth and women’s economic empowerment in developing countries. As digital transformation accelerates worldwide\, we need to recognize the importance of DPI in enabling digital services and promoting innovation. DPI as a concept is neither new nor tied to one country or region and it is evolving. The international community needs to elevate and broaden the dialogue surrounding DPI to maximize its transformative impact. DPI facilitates streamlined interactions between citizens and the government\, offering convenient access to services\, reducing bureaucracy\, and enhancing transparency. By providing a robust framework for digital services\, DPI enables governments to deliver efficient and citizen-centric goods while ensuring security\, privacy\, and accessibility. \n\n\nThis event will serve as an overview and introduction to DPI from the point of view of different U.S. and international organizations and will focus on the following questions: \n\nWhat is DPI and why is it important for international development?\nWhat role can the U.S. government play in accelerating the adoption of DPI in developing countries?\nHow can the U.S. government work with the international community to inspire country deployment of DPI at scale?\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is made possible through the generous support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. \n\n\n\nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:SPY VALLEY: An Engineer's Nuclear Betrayal
DESCRIPTION:International Spy Museum | In-Person & Online Event \nDescription: Silicon Valley is an innovation incubator\, but not just for tech — hand in hand with its growth have been efforts to steal enticing secrets. Spy Valley: An Engineer’s Nuclear Betrayal\, a new podcast series from Project Brazen and PRX\, introduces the world to a riveting tale from the dawn of this new era of global espionage. \nThe series\, produced by Goat Rodeo and hosted by award-winning intelligence and national security journalist Zach Dorfman\, explores the story of a man named James Harper\, a Silicon Valley engineer turned spy\, and how he began selling nuclear secrets to the Soviet Bloc. It became the case of a lifetime for San Francisco-based FBI spy hunters. Dorfman got to know these agents and their amazing stories as well as the tale of Harper—from extensive\, revealing interviews with the former ex-spy himself. The series takes listeners on a journey of nuclear spying\, technology theft\, and double agents\, with intelligence that might still help Moscow in a nuclear exchange today. \nJoin us for a live panel moderated by Sharon Weinberger\, the national security and foreign policy editor at The Wall Street Journal\, featuring Zach Dorfman\, investigative journalist and host of Spy Valley; John Gibbons\, who headed the United States Attorney’s prosecution team in the case against James Harper; and retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent and Spy Museum Advisory Board Member David Major. They’ll explore how the tech capital of the world became a hotbed for Soviet Bloc spies and what James Harper’s betrayal of his country has meant for modern day warfare. \nAfter their conversation\, you can ask Zach\, John\, and Dave for their insight into other aspects of nuclear spying and technology theft. Reception to follow. \nIn the meantime\, listen to the series — out now — here or wherever you get your podcasts. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Ukraine\, the West\, and the world: Breaking point or transformational moment?
DESCRIPTION:The Brookings Institution | In-Person & Online Event \nDescription: Russia’s unabated aggression against Ukraine\, China’s assertiveness\, and extremist challengers in upcoming elections in the United States and Europe are forcing governments to question the future of the trans-Atlantic relationship. What interest does America have in a Europe at peace? And what should Europeans do to help Ukraine win said peace\, manage China\, and keep NATO and the European Union together? How do Western democracies balance existential threats\, such as climate change and creeping authoritarianism\, with the needs of domestic policy? And what can they do to shape a global order that maximizes peace and security for all? In a season-opening event on September 15\, the Center on the United States and Europe at the Brookings Institution will host a three-part conference to address these issues. The conference will open with a conversation between Oxford historian Timothy Garton Ash\, author of the recent book “Homelands: A Personal History of Europe\,” and Brookings Senior Fellow Fiona Hill\, moderated by The New Yorker’s Susan Glasser\, about lessons of the post-Berlin Wall period. Their conversation will be followed by a discussion about the ramifications of the Russia-Ukraine war and the sharpening U.S.-China rivalry for the Euro-Atlantic security order. The event will close with a panel on the resilience of democracies in the face of transformative global disruptions and contested Western hegemony. \nThe registration link can be found below.

After the discussion\, please join us for a reception in the Hazel Hall atrium to celebrate the official launch of the NSI Cyber and Tech Center. \nAs part of the CTC’s informal launch in early 2023\, NSI held a series of events focused on the early cyber lessons learned from the war in Ukraine\, including how the American public and private sectors supported Ukraine in cyberspace and with the deployment of American cyber capabilities\, how the public and private sectors worked together to defend the United States at home through efforts like Shields Up\, and what these efforts both at home and abroad might teach us about potential future conflicts and operationalizing cyber defenses at the regional\, state\, and local level. Learn more about the NSI CTC here. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:The Future of the National League for Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Stimson Center | Online Event \nDescription: With the military junta’s banning of the National League for Democracy (NLD)\, the arrest of its key leaders\, and violent suppression of political opposition and the resistance movement\, one of the central questions about the country’s future lies in where the NLD will go and how its relationship with the military and the resistance will transpire. Today\, the NLD operates while fragmented\, with some of its members in exile and its leaders still jailed. But the political party remains a significant and essential player in the future of the country. Join East Asia Program Co-Director Yun Sun for a discussion with pro-democracy activist and NLD member Myo Yan Naung Thein on the NLD\, its future\, and its relationship with other political players in the country. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Doing Business in Ukraine: The Role of the Private Sector in Ukraine’s Economic Reconstruction and Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Center for Strategic & International Studies | In-Person Event  \nDescription: The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)\, in collaboration with a coalition of partners\, will convene a conference entitled “Doing Business in Ukraine: The Role of the Private Sector in Ukraine’s Economic Reconstruction and Transformation”. This conference aims to bring together representatives from multinational companies\, the Biden Administration and U.S. Congress\, and a mix of approximately 50 Ukrainian participants from the private sector and government to discuss business and trade opportunities with the U.S. and G-7 allies. The conference will be informed by the work of the CSIS Ukraine Economic Reconstruction Commission\, which aims to develop a policy framework to guide the economic modernization and transformation of Ukraine. Following the Ukraine Reconstruction Conference in London\, this conference is an important opportunity to build off the commitments made in June and go deeper into key economic sectors that will be core to Ukraine’s reconstruction. The conference will also facilitate a dialogue to identify the immediate and longer-term barriers to investment in Ukraine\, and practical solutions to address these concerns. During the conference\, we would like to highlight four sectors: \n\nEnergy\nAgriculture\nDigital\nTransport and logistics\n\nCSIS would welcome senior-level participation from companies that are currently present in Ukraine or are interested in investing in Ukraine. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Korea: A New History of South & North
DESCRIPTION:Center For Strategic & International Studies | Online Event \nDescription: Please join us for a special episode of The Capital Cable as we talk about Victor Cha and Ramon Pacheco Pardo’s new book\, Korea: A New History of South & North. Korea has a long\, riveting history—it is also a divided nation. South Korea is a vibrant democracy\, the tenth largest economy\, and is home to a world-renowned culture. North Korea is ruled by the most authoritarian regime in the world\, a poor country in a rich region\, and is best known for the cult of personality surrounding the ruling Kim family. But both Koreas share a unique common history. Victor Cha and Ramon Pacheco Pardo draw on decades of research to explore the history of modern Korea\, from the late nineteenth century\, Japanese occupation\, and Cold War division to the present day. A small country caught amongst the world’s largest powers—including China\, Japan\, Russia\, and the United States—Korea’s fate has been closely connected to its geography and the strength of its leadership and society. This comprehensive history sheds light on the evolving identities of the two Koreas\, explaining the sharp differences between North and South\, and prospects for unification. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Transatlantic Forum on GeoEconomics
DESCRIPTION:Atlantic Council | Online Event  \nDescription: The Atlantic Council and Atlantik-Brücke are pleased to invite you to the Transatlantic Forum on GeoEconomics on September 22\, 2023. This year’s event follows the inaugural Forum held last year. In the heart of Berlin\, we will convene economic and financial leaders from both sides of the Atlantic. At this year’s conference\, we will outline a way forward on the use of tools of economic statecraft. The Group of Seven (G7) response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has shown us a new dimension of transatlantic economic coordination. The levers of sanctions\, export controls\, and asset freezes have been pulled to pursue foreign policy and national security objectives. But the use of these tools has raised important questions. How can both the United States and Europe avoid becoming economically dependent on adversarial powers without compromising growth or triggering more inflation? Which rules and best practices should form a new blueprint for economic statecraft? How has the West’s response to Putin’s aggression reshaped the contours of the role of the dollar and euro in the global economy? \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Purchasing for Impact: Making Procurement Work for All
DESCRIPTION:Center for Strategic & International Studies | In-Person & Online Event  \nDescription: Please join the CSIS Project on Prosperity and Development\, in partnership with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS)\, for a discussion on procurement in support of localization and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Leading procurement executives from national and multilateral development agencies will share their experience putting “development spend” to best use to increase development results\, support local capabilities\, and guarantee the greatest impact. The panel will feature Anne-Claire Howard\, Director of the Procurement Group at UNOPS.Government procurement amounts to $11 trillion per year worldwide\, around 13 percent of global GDP. Sustainable approaches to public procurement therefore present a significant long-term economic opportunity for businesses of all sizes and the chance to drive progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Against the backdrop of constrained global public finances\, sustainable and strategic public procurement can help maximize impact\, alleviate fiscal constraints\, and promote efficient use of resources. CSIS will host a networking reception for sustainable development practitioners following the conclusion of the panel discussion. If you plan to attend the reception only\, please fill out the same registration form as for the panel discussion. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Rising to the Moment - Launching USAID's new Bureau for Democracy\, Human Rights\, and Governance
DESCRIPTION:Center For Strategic & International Studies | In-Person Event \nDescription: Please join the CSIS Project on Prosperity and Development and the CSIS Human Rights Initiative\, in collaboration with USAID’s new Democracy\, Human Rights and Governance (DRG) Bureau\, on Tuesday\, October 3 from 3:00 – 4:15 PM ET for an engaging panel discussion featuring DRG leaders on the launch of the Bureau at this pivotal moment. The event will include keynote remarks from the DRG Bureau’s Assistant to the Administrator\, Shannon N Green\, followed by a panel that will explore ongoing challenges to democracy\, rights\, and governance priorities and how to holistically embrace DRG principles and practices in U.S. foreign policy and development assistance. Democracies are confronting serious challenges from within and across their borders\, and the U.S. Government must be bold and intentional in its response. Rising authoritarianism\, democratic backsliding\, rapid technological adoption\, rampant disinformation\, transnational corruption\, growing inequality\, the COVID pandemic\, and malign actions by Russia and China have all dramatically changed the development landscape and created significant democracy-\, rights- and governance-related challenges around the world.  USAID is working to modernize programming and adapt to meet many of these challenges\, including through the establishment of the Agency’s new Bureau for Democracy\, Human Rights\, and Governance\, an elevation intended to better advance a world where freedom is flourishing\, and democracy is delivering. \nThe registration link can be found below.
