SUMMARY:Negotiating Israel-Lebanon Maritime Borders
DESCRIPTION:United States Institute of Peace | In-Person and Virtual Event \nDescription: In October 2022\, after more than ten years of negotiations across three administrations\, Israel\, Lebanon and the United States announced that an agreement had been reached between Israel and Lebanon on each country’s maritime border. The agreement opens the door for economic and energy development and — at least in the minds of the optimistic — offers the potential for further changes in Israel and Lebanon’s hostile bilateral relationship. The agreement has been lauded for resolving an issue between two countries in conflict with one-another and serves as an example of pragmatism and mutual-benefit overriding long-term hostility. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:The Economic Costs of Russia’s War Against Ukraine: Views from Kyiv’s Expert Community
DESCRIPTION:Carnegie Endowment for International Peace | In-Person Virtual Event \nDescription: As we near the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine\, the economic effects of the war are staggering. Relentless Russian attacks against Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure have substantially raised the costs of recovery and reconstruction. And despite unprecedented Western economic sanctions\, there are few signs that Moscow is struggling to fund its war machine. What are the key attributes of a sustainable long-term strategy for supporting Ukraine while increasing pressure on the Kremlin? \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Building Peace from the Inside Out A Conversation About Sierra Leone’s Fambul Tok Program and the Transformative Power of Locally-Led Solutions
DESCRIPTION:United States Institute of Peace | Virtual Event \nDescription: Our world urgently needs locally-led approaches to advance peace and development. Today’s international aid system is stretched thin\, as needs reach record highs. Assistance often continues to hinder local leadership\, failing to build on the local resources within communities that form the bedrock of effective social change. Although research consistently shows that peacebuilding is more successful when done by the people most impacted\, many operational challenges stand in the way of implementing a new development approach. Sierra Leone’s community reconciliation program\, Fambul Tok\, offers a unique model for building peace ‘from the inside out’ and can help us to reimagine the top-down approaches that have too often failed to end violent conflicts. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Assessing the Future of US Iran-Policy Amidst Popular Uprising
DESCRIPTION:Schar School of Policy and Government\, George Mason University | IN-Person \nDescription: How should US Iran-Policy be reframed in light of recent political events there\, namely the uprisings and revolutionary movement\, and vis-a-vis Russo-Iranian collaboration in Ukraine and Iran. This forum seeks to inform the general public\, academics and policy-makers about the current state of events in Iran and their implications for regional and international political and security spheres. SUMMARY:Russia’s Road to War with Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Stimson Center | Virtual Event \nDescription: Tracing the relationship between the two countries from the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991 to Putin’s invasion in 2022\, what emerges from Samir Puri’s book\, Russia’s Road to War with Ukraine\, is a portrait of a nation caught in a geopolitical tug of war between Russia and the West. While Russia is identified as the sole aggressor\, we see how Western bodies such as the EU and NATO unrealistically raised Ukraine’s expectations of membership before dashing them\, leaving Ukraine without formal allies and fatally exposed to Russian aggression. \nAs a former international observer\, Samir Puri was present for several of the major events covered in his book. He uses this experience to ask honestly: how did we get here? Why does Vladimir Putin view Ukraine as the natural property of Russia? Did the West handle its dealings with these countries prudently? Or did it inflame the tensions left amidst the ruins of the Soviet Union? Were there any missed opportunities to avert the war? And how might this conflict end? \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Unpacking the Politics of Opposition in South Asia
DESCRIPTION:Carnegie Endowment for International Peace | Virtual Event \nDescription: While voters across South Asia were once optimistic about the future of democracy\, recent political setbacks in the region have dampened these hopes. However\, most accounts of democratic backsliding focus on the strategies and tactics of regime incumbents\, leaving little room for close study of opposition forces. In a new Carnegie South Asia report\, The Politics of Opposition in South Asia\, a group of scholars attempts to fill this analytical gap by focusing on the diverse array of opposition forces at work. Exploring a range of cases—from citizen protests in Sri Lanka to armed groups in Pakistan and street movements in Nepal—this report argues that opposition forces can help explain regime behavior as well as inform the possibilities of democratic renewal. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Backfire: The Global Ripple Effects of U.S. Sanctions
DESCRIPTION:Carnegie Endowment for International Peace | Virtual Event \nDescription: Sanctions have become the go-to foreign policy tool for the United States. Coercive economic measures such as trade tariffs\, financial penalties\, and export controls affect large numbers of companies and states across the globe. But while U.S. policymakers see sanctions as a low-cost tactic\, these measures also have potent side effects that\, in some cases\, can even harm American interests. In her new book Backfire\, Agathe Demarais explores the surprising ways sanctions affect multinational companies\, governments\, and ultimately millions of people around the world. Drawing on interviews with experts\, policymakers\, and people in sanctioned countries\, she examines the unintended consequences of the use of sanctions as a diplomatic weapon. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:If We Don’t Sell: What Happens When States are Cut Off from US Arms
DESCRIPTION:Stimson Center | Virtual Event \n“If we don’t sell them arms\, someone else will\,” has become a well-known refrain in the arms trade world\, implying that partners cut off from U.S. defense exports will quickly source them from other suppliers. But there is reason to believe that there is far more complexity to the issue than suggested by this simple axiom. \nJoin the Stimson Center for a critical look at some of the assumptions reflected in the U.S. arms trade and how they shape conceptions of leverage\, influence\, and conditionality in international security cooperation. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:China’s High-Altitude Surveillance Balloon\, National Security\, and U.S.-China Relations
DESCRIPTION:Foreign Policy Research Institute | Virtual Event \nDescription: On February 4\, the United States shot down a high-altitude surveillance balloon launched from China that had been operating in U.S. airspace for several days on a route that passed near sensitive national security sites. In subsequent days\, the United States detected and destroyed additional unauthorized objects of unidentified origin. The “spy balloon” incident led to the postponement of Secretary of State Blinken’s planned trip to Beijing\, further strained U.S.-China relations\, and increased concerns about U.S. domain awareness\, China’s intelligence programs\, and related national security issues. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:The Middle East and Russia's War on Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:German Marshall Fund | Virtual  \nDescription: The political\, economic\, and strategic implications of the Russian invasion of Ukraine have deeply affected Middle Eastern countries. While the rupture in Russia-Europe energy relations offers new opportunities for regional oil and gas producers\, disrupted grain supplies increase socioeconomic pressure on Middle Eastern populations. At the diplomatic level\, several Middle Eastern powers have adopted a policy of hedging to manage their national interests vis-à-vis Russia. The risk of an escalation with Iran and concerns about the future of US engagement in regional security affairs also weigh heavily on political decision-making. How has the war affected Middle Eastern powers’ relations with the United States\, Canada\, and European partners? What are the long-term strategic implications for the Middle East and current alliances in the region? How should transatlantic allies approach the hedging policy of Middle Eastern partners toward the war? What are the consequences of growing European energy dependence on the Middle East? Join us virtually as we explore these and other questions with our guests. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Rescuing Democracy in Myanmar
DESCRIPTION:United States Institute of Peace | Virtual \nDescription: For decades\, the democracy deficit in Myanmar has left its people vulnerable to violence and instability. Since first coming to power in 1962\, a draconian military regime has deployed brutal tactics against minorities and individuals seeking democratic freedoms. In that time\, the military has routinely thwarted efforts to build peace despite ever-worsening internal conflict\, particularly with ethnic groups. Even during the country’s brief and limited democratic turn from 2011 to 2021\, the military-drafted constitution prevented genuine democracy from developing. And the military coup in February 2021 has only unleashed further violence\, instability and human suffering on the people of Myanmar. However\, a diverse group of pro-democracy actors has come together in the two years since the military coup. Despite facing violent oppression and mass arrests\, this movement has slowly grown in strength and is now engaged in an armed struggle against the military with the goal of creating a genuine federal democracy in Myanmar. \nThe registration link can be found below.
