SUMMARY:The Belt and Road Initiative at 10: Challenges and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Center for Strategic and International Studies | Virtual Event \nDescription: Launched in 2013 by Xi Jinping\, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is China’s flagship overseas investment project\, encompassing agreements with over 150 countries and summing to around $1 trillion in projects. As the BRI enters its second decade\, the initiative faces several hurdles. High-profile projects have run into challenges\, many countries’ ability to borrow has declined\, and skepticism of China’s broader geopolitical intentions has grown in partner countries. How are Chinese scholars assessing the state of the BRI 10 years in? What risks and opportunities do they envision for its future development? Please join the Interpret: China project for a discussion of these and other important questions with a panel of experts who will unpack recently translated primary source materials. The panel will include Yunnan Chen\, Research Fellow in Development and Public Finance programme at ODI\, Manoj Kewalramani\, Senior Associate (Non-resident) with the Freeman Chair in China Studies and Chairperson of the Indo-Pacific Research Programme\, and China studies fellow at the Takshashila Institution\, and Henry Tugendhat\, economist with the China team at the U.S. Institute of Peace. Lily McElwee\, Deputy Director and Fellow with the Freeman Chair in China Studies\, will moderate the discussion. \nThe registration link can be found below.

DESCRIPTION:The Atlantic Council | In-Person & Virtual Event \nDescription: The United States and its allies and partners have laid out five operational domains for wartime—air\, land\, maritime\, cyberspace\, and space—but Russia’s war in Ukraine has revealed a sixth domain: the “sphere of activities” of the private sector. What is an effective strategy for the private sector in wartime\, and why is developing this strategy critical for the effectiveness of US and allied militaries? Please join the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security for the launch of the report “The sixth domain: The role of the private sector in warfare\,” on Friday\, April 26\, 2024\, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. ET. This event will discuss how policymakers can forge a more constructive US government-private sector relationship for wartime and integrate the private sector as the missing sixth operational domain. \nIt will feature welcome remarks from Clementine G. Starling\, director of the Atlantic Council’s Forward Defense program\, and keynote remarks from Jen Easterly\, director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency\, followed by a panel discussion with Franklin D. Kramer\, distinguished fellow and board director at the Atlantic Council; Greg Little\, senior counselor at Palantir Technologies; Emma Schroeder\, associate director\, Cyber Statecraft Initiative at the Atlantic Council; and Leonor Tomero\, vice president for government relations at JA Green & Company\, moderated by Marjorie Censer\, editor of Defense News.
