SUMMARY:Unpacking Recent Developments in the Chinese Military: What's Happening within the PLA?
DESCRIPTION:Center for Strategic and International Studies | Virtual Event \nDescription: Please join the CSIS China Power Project on October 31st from 9:00 am – 10:00 am EDT for a virtual panel discussion on significant developments within the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). There have been several surprising occurrences within the PLA in recent months\, including the disappearance of Defense Minister Li Shangfu from public view\, as well as the sudden removal of three top generals from the PLA Rocket Force\, which controls China’s nuclear and conventional missiles forces. There has also been unsubstantiated reporting about a deadly accident involving a PLA Navy nuclear-powered submarine. Speculation abounds regarding the details and causes of these developments. What are the implications of these internal dynamics on PLA modernization\, operations\, and activities? How might this impact U.S.-China relations as well as China’s relations with its neighbors?  Joining us to unpack these questions are three leading analysts of the PLA; Mr. Roderick Lee\, director of research at the Air University’s China Aerospace Studies Institute; Dr. Shen Ming-Shih\, research fellow and director of the Division of National Security Research and acting deputy chief executive officer at the Institute for National Defense and Security Research in Taiwan; and Dr. Joel Wuthnow\, senior research fellow at the Center for the Study of Chinese Military Affairs within the Institute for National Strategic Studies at the National Defense University. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Energy Security: A Discussion with Norwegian Minister Terje Aasland
DESCRIPTION:Center for Strategic and International Studies | In-Person and Virtual Event \nDescription: Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, Norway has emerged as the number one supplier of natural gas to Europe. Norwegian natural gas output is projected to reach record highs\, reflecting the continued demand in Europe due to ongoing geopolitical concerns from the war in Ukraine. At the same time\, Norway looks to balance higher energy prices and energy security concerns while maintaining its commitment to the energy transition. Achieving the transition will require increased renewable energy production\, building out the electric power grid\, stronger energy efficiency\, and sustained decarbonization measures. The CSIS Energy Security and Climate Change Program is pleased to host Terje Aasland\, Minister of Petroleum and Energy of Norway\, for a discussion on Norway’s vital role as an energy supplier\, and how the United States and Norway are working together towards providing a stable energy supply and a sustainable and just transition. Moderated by Joseph Majkut\, Director of the CSIS Energy Security and Climate Change Program. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:A New Missile Age in the Indo-Pacific
DESCRIPTION:Carnegie Endowment for International Peace | In-Person and Virtual Event \nDescription: The Indo-Pacific is on the cusp of a new missile age. As regional tensions rise\, many countries are increasing their inventories of short- to intermediate-range missile systems. This proliferation could intensify already complex security dilemmas\, particularly related to North Korea and the Taiwan Strait\, and heighten nuclear escalation risks. Geopolitical dynamics\, including U.S.-China competition and action-reaction relations between North Korea and South Korea\, are driving investments by Indo-Pacific countries in a range of missile capabilities. The U.S. withdrawal from the INF Treaty in 2019\, after years of alleging Russian noncompliance\, is also accelerating proliferation. Washington is now pursuing new ground-launched missiles\, with a focus on Asia. Join Carnegie for a discussion on the drivers and consequences of the spread of missiles in the Indo-Pacific with Masashi Murano\, Ankit Panda\, and Jenny Town. Panda will share findings and recommendations from his new Carnegie report\, Indo-Pacific Missile Arsenals: Avoiding Spirals and Mitigating Escalation Risks. George Perkovich will moderate. \nA reception will follow from 3:15pm to 3:45pm. \nThe registration link can be found below.
