SUMMARY:After the EU-US Summit: What’s next for international cooperation on industrial decarbonization?
DESCRIPTION:The Atlantic Council | Virtual Event \nDescription: Please join the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center and Climate Advisers virtually on Tuesday\, October 24 from 9:30 – 10:30 am ET for an expert discussion on strengthening international cooperation on trade policies to enable decarbonization of heavy industry. During the discussion\, panelists will also address the outcomes of the EU-US Leaders Summit\, scheduled for October 20\, related to the harmonization of trade of emissions-intensive goods. With the conclusion of the negotiations for the Global Arrangement on Sustainable Steel and Aluminum approaching\, the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism entering its transition phase\, and an increase in domestic green industrial subsidies\, there is growing need to align standards for low-carbon industrial production and harmonize trade policies in order to prevent overcapacity and ensure a level playing field\, ultimately contributing to global emissions reductions. While the EU and US are making promising strides towards industrial decarbonization and climate-aligned trade policies\, it is imperative to coordinate with major heavy industry producing countries to achieve climate objectives. Ensuring that EU-US negotiations result in solutions that can be extended globally will be critical in fostering international cooperation that transcends the transatlantic relationship. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:How Creative Diplomacy Prevented an Oil Disaster on Yemen’s Coast
DESCRIPTION:The United States Institute of Peace | Virtual Event \nDescription: In August 2023\, the U.N. completed an operation to remove 1.1 million oil barrels onboard the FSO Safer\, a decaying oil supertanker off Yemen’s Red Sea coast. The FSO Safer had been abandoned ever since civil war broke out in Yemen\, leaving it at risk for a significant oil spill that would have resulted in environmental\, economic and humanitarian catastrophes and required tens of billions of dollars in estimated clean-up costs. The United States played a key role in the FSO Safer operation\, which has been lauded for its creative\, behind-the-scenes diplomacy and serves as a model for preventing future crises and coordinating across the international system. Join USIP for a conversation with U.S. Special Envoy for Yemen Tim Lenderking to unpack the FSO Safer operation. The discussion will highlight the innovative diplomacy approaches taken and shed light on how the operation could serve as a model for reinvigorated American soft power in the Middle East going forward. Special Envoy Lenderking will also speak on the FSO Safer operation in the broader context of Yemen’s peace effort. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Debriefing the US-EU Summit
DESCRIPTION:The Atlantic Council | Virtual Event \nDescription: Please join the Atlantic Council’s Europe Center for a virtual public event to debrief the US-EU Summit. This discussion will take place over Zoom on Tuesday\, October 24 at 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. ET. On Friday\, October 20\, European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen head to the White House for an official US-EU Summit to showcase the strength of the transatlantic relationship. Washington and Brussels have both prioritized the transatlantic relationship across a range of policy areas\, and the Summit comes at a critical time for the United States and Europe. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine continues into its 20th month\, with Ukraine’s counteroffensive relying on much-needed US and European support. Growing concern and alignment on China have led both Washington and Brussels to embrace “de-risking” strategies. And despite the significant improvement in relations\, remaining trade irritants over steel and aluminum and green technology subsidies must still be resolved. The Summit also comes as the political outlook on both sides of the Atlantic becomes increasingly uncertain with elections in the United States and Europe scheduled for next year. The Summit will be an important opportunity to set the relationship on stable footing in light of uncertain political and economic perspectives. Against this backdrop\, the Atlantic Council’s Europe Center will discuss the outcomes of the Summit\, debrief its major deliverables\, and unpack the implications for the future of the US-EU relationship. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Closing the Latino wealth gap: Examining regional differences in Latino communities
DESCRIPTION:The Brookings Institute | Virtual Event \nDescription: Latinos play an important role in shaping the U.S. economy. As one of the fastest-growing demographic groups in the country\, Latinos have very high labor participation rates\, and the number of Latinos who own homes has been steadily increasing for years. Latino-owned employer businesses continue to outpace white-owned employer businesses and U.S. businesses in general in terms of revenue growth\, with the nearly 5 million Latino-owned businesses contributing over $800 billion annually to the U.S. economy. Moreover\, by some estimates\, Latino wealth has grown by an average of about 7% annually for the past 20 years. Yet the financial well-being of many Latino families does not reflect many of these economic contributions\, and the underlying causes of the wealth gap between Latino and white families are often misunderstood or understudied. On Tuesday\, October 24\, Brookings Metro will host an event in partnership with the Latino Policy Forum examining the Latino wealth gap and how to close it. The event will highlight the findings from an upcoming report (co-authored with the Latino Policy Forum) that studies Latino wealth\, assets\, and debt in six states (Illinois\, California\, Texas\, New York\, Florida\, and North Carolina). The event will also feature remarks from Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.)\, as well as a panel of experts discussing why regional diversity matters for understanding Latino wealth and how to close the wealth gap through asset building\, eliminating debt\, transferring intergenerational wealth\, accessing financial networks\, and other factors that lead to achieving income and job stability. \nThe registration link can be found below.

SUMMARY:Implementing the 2022 National Defense Strategy: A conversation with Mara Karlin
DESCRIPTION:The Brookings Institute | Virtual Event \nDescription: October 27\, 2023 marks the anniversary of the Biden administration’s release of the 2022 National Defense Strategy (NDS). The strategy provides a roadmap for how the United States will advance its interests and meet the challenges of this “decisive decade.” It prominently features the concepts of integrated deterrence and campaigning\, highlights the importance of working closely with allies and partners\, and prioritizes the acute challenge posed by Russia and\, much more significantly\, the pacing challenge posed by China. Looking back over the past year\, to what degree have the Department of Defense’s (DOD) implementation efforts proven effective? How closely aligned are the DOD’s resource allocation and prioritized objectives in practice? What are the implications of the pronounced focus on China for the decisions the DOD must make concerning other key regions and transboundary challenges? On October 24\, the Strobe Talbott Center for Security\, Strategy\, and Technology at Brookings will host former Brookings scholar Mara Karlin\, performing the duties of deputy under secretary of defense for policy\, to reflect on the NDS and assess the DOD’s implementation successes and the challenges the department still faces since its release. \nThe registration link can be found below.
